Steep and bordered by the main thoroughfares of North Road and Gibsons Way, the Gibsons neighbourhood of Creekside-Hillcrest consists mostly of residential homes with some businesses mixed in.
Gibsons Creek cuts through the east edge of Creekside-Hillcrest. Starting at Reed Road, the creek zig-zags its way through the neighbourhood as it makes its way downhill toward the ocean. Though not obviously accessible, there are three entrances to Gibsons Ravine Park which follows the creek. Steep and brushy, walking down the ravine to the creek is possible but requires your full attention.
The Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department sits at the corner of North Road and Seacot Way. With more than 40 members on call 24 hours a day, the fire department is a critical part of Gibsons. Its volunteer service responds to structure and vehicle fires and even the occasional out-of-jurisdiction callout.
At the corner of North Road and Gibsons is the Heritage Playhouse. This 146-seat, fully equipped theatre boasts light, sound, and projection systems. Originally built in 1929 as the Women’s Institute Hall, it began its second life as a theater in the year 2000.
There’s a handful of businesses in the neighbourhood, including those in Seaview Place. The largest commercial building in Hillcrest-Creekside, this mixed use property on Gibsons Way is home to Panago Pizza, Washtub Laundromat, and a number of rental apartments.
The rest of the neighbourhood is largely residential. The majority of the homes are detached houses, but there are some high density multi-family complexes sprinkled throughout the area. In addition to Gibsons Ravine Park, there’s also an unnamed park and playground at the corner of Steinbrunner Road and Cascade Crescent.
Because of the neighbourhood’s steep elevation, many residents enjoy some combination of ocean, island, and mountain views. Depending on your specific location, you may even get a nighttime view of Vancouver’s lights.
Kids living in Creekside-Hillcrest can attend class at nearby Gibsons Elementary, Ephinstone Secondary, and Sunshine Coast Alternative School. These schools are within easy walking distance of this neighbourhood.
Shopping, restaurants, and the medical clinic are all less than 3 minutes away by car. And it only takes 5 minutes to drive to the nearby Langdale ferry terminal that connects the Sunshine Coast to the Lower Mainland.
This is a friendly neighbourhood in an excellent central location. If you’re looking for a walkable family home that’s minutes from schools, stores, and the ferry, Creekside-Hillcrest should be on your shopping list.
